CapMetro plans to shut down two additional bus shuttle routes that service students living in East Austin neighborhoods. This continues a process that saw the closure of the dedicated Enfield Road (ER) shuttle. The elimination of CR & WL shuttles has severe social and economic consequences for all University students since many of the most affordable housing units are found along these routes. Additionally, CapMetro has failed to solicit University and rider feedback or make any coordinated effort to inform students of the impending closure on the scale they did in 2011 when the ER shuttle’s future in West Austin was at stake.
According to a report in the Daily Texan, Melissa Anaya, the Cap Metro spokesperson, said the organization is currently accepting feedback on these route eliminations. Anaya said, “We are in the public input phase, and we do expect the bulk of the feedback to come through the meetings.” “But if we don’t hear from students, we won’t know what they’re thinking.” This decision comes at the very start of the semester when students are still
making their readjustments to campus life.
We, the undersigned, students, faculty, and concerned residents in Austin demand that CapMetro keep the CR and WL lines open so that students who need them can have access to safe, reliable transportation to and from campus.
