The political climate in America right now is in turmoil. Issues such as racial inequality, police brutality, a widening gap in economic wealth, and the growing divide in political parties have continued to plague our nation throughout an actual pandemic. We need our politicians to enact meaningful reform which benefits the majorities in society and addresses these vital concerns.

Our representatives have gotten away with ineffectual leadership because most of the country doesn't vote. During presidential election years, American voter turnout has recently been around 55%; in other years, it is typically much lower. When a majority of registered voters simply vote their party lines, officials can deliver sub-par performances and blame the other party to achieve re-election. A major step in the right direction is to increase voter turnout in the United States.

Voter apathy in the US is due to a myriad of factors, but experts have shown time and time again that socioeconomic status is one of the largest contributing factors: poor people don't vote. While there are also complex reasons behind this fact, employees not being able to take time-off at hourly jobs holds a significant portion of the blame. Low-income employees simply cannot afford to lose a day of work in order to go vote. Additionally, because minorities in the US are disproportionally of lower socioeconomic class, this means they vote with much less frequency due to this barrier. A significant portion of our country subliminally pressured not to vote, and that is not acceptable.

We propose that the best way to fix this is through our companies taking a stand. If companies want to claim to help the poor, support the fight against racial inequality, and care about us during these "troubling times" for good PR then they should actually have to do something about it. We want election day off so that all Americans can vote!

Capital One was a leader in handling coronavirus. They declared work-from-home early and decisively, with other companies following in their footsteps. For this, they deserve recognition and praise. We strongly believe Capital One should do the same for Election Day. Capital One should give all its employees election day off, starting a chain reaction among companies that eventually leads to the national holiday! (If Capital One cannot afford to give another day off to it's employees, then exchange election day for Columbus Day: a controversial holiday in recent years)

You can't fix everything all at once, but the employees and customers of Capital One can pressure the company to do the right thing and be a leader in this movement. To not only change banking for good, but to change America for good.
