Why this petition matters

Started by Bergrivier Anti Poaching Project

Sign our petition and help us stop gillnets and night time Fish Poachers.

Gill netting in this estuary was banned in 2003.

The targeted species being poached include Harder and estuarine round herring that are the dominant fish species in the estuary, while elf also make up a significant proportion of fish numbers being gillnetted. Many other species such as Kob Garrick and Steenbras are already critically endangered and are most abundant fish being poached by the gillnets.

Adequate protection needs to be applied to the entire estuary, however, to ensure the survival of these species as they are highly mobile moving from the mouth right up to the top of the estuary. We need to launch this Petition to motivate the needed departments to take drastic action.

There has been a significant year to year decrease in fish numbers and this directly influences tourists that visit the town especially to fish these waterways.

There is a handful of Poachers in the region that pretend to be fishermen, that use the disguise of fishermen to continue to sell poached fish and illegally benefit financially.

These same poachers run a civilian terror campaign against local members of the community and openly threaten and slander any individual and their company that dare to stand up.

With your help a major difference can be made, and Bergrivier Anti Poaching Project and other volunteers can be recognized as for their effort to protect these waterways.
