Students, teachers, community members, alumni, and administrators of the Plymouth-Canton area, it is time to retire the Canton High School Mascot of the “Chiefs.”

Eight tribes in the United Tribes in Michigan explicitly condemn the “Chiefs” mascot as it dishonors their tribes, and support the change of our mascot. The mascot takes away from the importance of being a Chief in these tribes’ cultures and belittles the importance of the position. In addition, having “Chiefs” as a school mascot reinforces the long lasting stereotype that Native Americans are "savages" and are below-human. Recently, professional sports teams and schools, such as the Washington Redskins and the Paw Paw School District in Michigan, have decided to retire their Native American mascots due to their negative impacts and connotations.

It is time for Canton High School and PCEP to be part of the change, to start eliminating the racial prejudices that occur on our campus, and become a more inclusive environment for all of our students. We must do better and can be better, starting with the name change of the Canton High School's mascot, the “Chiefs.” Sign this petition to help retire the “Chiefs” mascot and be part of the change in the Plymouth-Canton community.
