Petitioning Canonical Ltd. Mark Shuttleworth

Make KDE Plasma the default desktop for Ubuntu 18.04 instead of GNOME Shell

It seems like some of the functionality you had with Unity is already built into the latest version of Plasma by default, and that Plasma gives you finer-grained control over the experience you can present to Ubuntu users out of the box. Others have pointed out via demo how much closer to Unity Plasma already is than GNOME Shell:

Moreover, any customizations you make to Plasma can then be available for other users of Plasma on non-Ubuntu distributions, users who always loved Unity 7 but for whatever reason switched to, e.g., a rolling release distribution.

Canonical has already accumulated some experience working with Qt, and anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that, once exposed to it, developers prefer working with Qt rather than GTK (note that the LXDE desktop is switching to Qt for example).

Moreover, the KDE community seems like a community more open to symbiotic collaboration than the GNOME community.

Some benchmarks seem to indicate that Plasma is more performant than GNOME Shell.
