Charlie Horan started this petition to Canoeists and

The weirs on the Barrow river are going to be re-engineered to allow for the migration and proliferation of species throughout the waterway.

No consideration has been given to canoeing or kayaking in this regard.

No consideration has been given to the safe passage of canoes or kayaks

A well used educational site for introducing novice paddlers whitewater skills made unusable

A site used to develop Level 3 canoe and river kayak instructors will no longer be usable

A site that is used daily by recreational paddlers will no longer be safe

A site that offers a value to the local economy through tourism will no longer be usable

The rock/boulder walls crossing the river that are proposed will pose a serious threat to paddlers at all water levels, But especially low to medium levels when most recreational paddlers currently use the river.

Potential for pinning, foot entrapment & retentive hydraulics will be significant

The scouring of the riverbed and then the input of limestone into a granite river, hold the potential to have a very negative impact on wildlife and the natural environment.

The potential use of reinforcement steel and other non natural materials pose a threat to the health and safety of all paddlers

The potential for movement of works materials during flood times thus creating hazards and negative environmental impact.

Destruction of a naturally beautiful landscape.

There are so many other ways to make some alterations that are not this drastic! This weir has stood for 250 years and serves a very functional purpose as is, and the rapids behind it are natural so have been in place since the river was formed.

The redevelopment of this and other weirs without due consideration to paddlers and their ability to freely and safely navigate this section of waterway at all water levels would be a complete injustice to the ongoing and future potential of the Barrow river as the premier canoeing destination in Ireland.
