Why this petition matters

Started by Chidiebere Onuokoro
While candidates are required by Nigerian laws to declare their assets while vying for elective positions, there is no obligation on them or the regulatory agency, that is, the Code of Conduct Bureau, to make such declarations public.
One would expect that the Freedom of Information Act will, at least at the federal level, make such documents accessible to the public.
However, this is not the case as the operation, and implementation of the Act leave more to be desired. Thus, the candidates should voluntarily disclose their assets declarations to the masses as there is no law prohibiting such.
Signing this petition would assist immensely in the fight against corruption and abuse of public office in the Nigerian political sphere.
