Why this petition matters

Dear Sanjuan Unified School District,

I ask of you to please cancel school this week. As you probably have noticed, the temperature lately has been astronomical and with football season on the rise there’s only bad things that could come of this. Having your kids attend school everyday is a very normal and routine task but when the temperatures are varying from 99-117 it’s quite concerning to have your child attend school all day burning under the heat of the sun. Many problems could come from having your child go to school this week which has many parents worried and taking their kids out for the week prematurely. But, just because some parents are doing it doesn’t mean anything for the majority of the children who have to go to school everyday in record high heat while testing, exercising, and eating for lunch on the hot concrete. This is wrong and I know your child would agree. Many issues come from rapid rises in heat gain due to exposure to hotter than average conditions compromises the body's ability to regulate temperature and can result in a cascade of illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and hyperthermia. Not only illnesses are a concerning, but falling grades. It is proven that kids word less efficiently in hot weather. Focusing and test taking becomes much less easy to even the best students because it’s hard to focus on a test when you’re dropping in sweat and you feel nauseous. Many kids will lose the opportunity to keep a good gpa due to the heat. There’s many other reasons such as state wide power outages. Some 67,000 Californians were without power Monday evening, according to powerotage.us, while ongoing power outages affected more than 40,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers across 28 counties. Without power, there’s no air conditioning or chrome books which are both very much important in modern classrooms. The risk of having no power in times like these is enough to say, “NO MORE SCHOOL FOR THE WEEK” Wouldn’t you agree? Cancel school this week until the weather has moderated itself to a functioning standard.
