Leah Maguire Housing Relocation Appeal

Leah Maguire is a resident of Cance Hall in the Southwest Residential Area of the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. Leah is facing sanctions of Housing Relocation by the University regarding her most recent write-up. On March 3rd, Leah's room was written up at approximately 7:15 am, as the RAs on duty for Blarney noticed "music blasting on the 4th floor". They approached Leah's room, and noticed "an empty beer can in the space" (One single can, without beer in it). Leah, at the time, was on housing probation (one step below Removal/Deferred).

Leah is known around Cance Hall as an extremely sweet and outgoing neighbor, friend, peer, etc. She always sacrifices her own time in order to help others. In the Statement of Community Living Principles, it states that "as a community, we dedicate ourselves to the following principles, rights, responsibilities, and community standards: Safety, inclusion, civility and engagement". As someone who has lived one door away from Leah's room, I can say in full confidence that Leah represents all of these characteristics, and that our community has been extremely lucky to have someone like Leah on our floor, in our building, and part of our community.

When Leah attended her sanction meeting, she was informed that they were attempting to remove her from Cance Hall. Leah appealed the sanction, and attended a meeting with Christina Landeta-Burdick, Assistant Dean of Students. She attended this meeting yielding multiple letters from members of the Cance Hall community in support of Leah, including Adam Lynch (her RA), and Olivia Thompson (Vice President of Cance Hall). On April 10th, Leah received her Sanction Hearing Outcome for her appeals meeting, informing her that her removal from Cance Hall was upheld.

Leah is being informed of her relocation from Cance Hall on April 10th, and the final day of classes in the Spring semester is May 1, exactly three weeks from the date of her sanctions being officially imposed. This process comes at an extremely inconvenient time, as finals are rapidly approaching, and the process has been going on since the beginning of March. As a result, Leah's grades have been negatively impacted due to the stress of the situation as a whole. She has been forced to miss time in the classroom and time on her homework in order to deal with this issue, due to the various meetings and preparation for the meetings (meeting with conduct advisors to discuss the process).

In the 2017-2018 Code of Student Conduct, according to the University, states that "Housing Relocation may occur when it is in the best interests of the Residence Hall Community". However, as members of the Cance Hall Community, we feel strongly that this is not the case for Leah's sanctions. By signing this petition, you are acknowledging that within your experience(s) living in, or visiting Cance Hall, your experience(s) with Leah Maguire have not reflected her serving as a negative influence in the community.
