Martin Buonanno started this petition to Canandaigua NY TOWN BOARD

There is a resolution which will be signed by the City of Canandaigua NY on August 6th , 2020,  to change the name of Squaw Island. There is a proposal to present this same idea to the Town of Canandaigua.

There are concerns by a few people that the name Squaw is offensive. The dictionary states it is the name of a North American Native woman. Two native women stated they weren’t offended on the Canandaigua Cronichles  Facebook site.
The majority of the Facebook discussion have been opposed to the change, but they didn’t attend the meeting, so their opinions were not considered.
We all know that Squaw Island is where the Canandaigua Braves hid their women and children in times of battle against other native tribes.
Please honor this oral tradition which has been retold to every generation since then.  It shows the respect and honor of the Braves who protected their most precious loved ones.  Please sign this petition to stop this action and preserve the name Squaw Island and honor what the Braves did in our community for now and always. At the very least, put it up for a referendum vote in November, 2020. Everybody will be paying attention to  all things political.
Location will be announced where you can sign the petition.
