Why this petition matters

Started by Ryley Marchant

I have been working in retail as a cashier for 5 years now. I have also given out millions of plastic shopping bags that are most likely not being reused or recycled, so now its time to reduce.

My goal is to ban single use plastics in my city (Thunder Bay) or atleast convince the large retail stores to start charging for plastic bags (decrease the chances of people taking a bag "for convenience") and offering reusable bags for sale at the tills. In doing so, I believe that this will reroute the general public's mind set and help people understand the difference that can be made by ridding our landfills of single use plastics.

I aim my mission towards Canadian Tire, Walmart, Safeway, and any other local business that provides free plastic bags for their shoppers. If we do manage to reduce the amount of single use plastic filling our landfills, we could save in many ways:

- unnecessary death of wildlife

- unnecessary materials filling landfills & increases their size/ locations

- unnecessary plastics covering our neighbourhoods and parks due to littering

These are just some ways that single use plastics effect our environment and putting a ban on them will significantly decrease the negative effect on the environment and our local wildlife.
