Natalie Bryant started this petition to Canadian Royal College Members

During the Covid 19 pandemic, the Canadian health care system has faced many challenges. A vital and valued part of that system is medical residents. These residents work long hours, sacrifice and give 100% of themselves each and every day and night.  The culmination of this journey is an exam at the end of residency. Almost every resident in Canada passes this exam and we are able to move to the next chapter in our careers. We plan our entire existence around this exam. We study day and night and sacrifice our physical and emotional wellbeing.

This year presented additional challenges due to the COVID 19 pandemic. In Mid March, a few weeks before the exams were to start, the Royal College canceled the exam, than rescheduled it, than cancelled it again and have now rescheduled it for Fall 2020, so long as a second wave doesn’t occur. Many of us lost employment, additional training, income and family planning time as a result. Residents were essential frontline workers, we couldn’t take the time off to study during the home stretch, online exams wouldn’t be provided, or it wasn’t possible as a result of social distancing. Those were some of the excuses given. When non of that worked, we were shammed for asking for a waiver during a pandemic. We were told to continue risking our lives on the frontline and to not expect any consideration. The term “Equity” was used to make us feel like the unjust. So many other profession expediated and waived exams during this unprecedented times, but the Royal College and Susan Moffat Bruce refused.

Susan Moffat Bruce is at the helm and this is a failure in leadership, communication and execution. We ask that she resign. We ask for a CEO who has relevant and current experience within the Canadian healthcare system. We ask for one who has a track record of leading Canadian physicians. We ask for a CEO who is focused on medical education and developing the next generation of physician leaders. We ask for CEO who understands and appreciates the Canadian healthcare system and the role that residents play in it. Most importantly, we ask for a CEO who is focused on servicing the public not on generating profits.
