Raquel Beesley started this petition to Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission and

There is a huge inequity in the broadcasting of male sports and female sports. Female sports are barely mentioned in the news, on sports channels, and on radio. Female professional athletes are paid a fraction of what male professional athletes are paid. Girls who are top of their game age-out by the time they turn 18, with no opportunities to make careers out of their sports, while top male athletes have opportunities their female counterparts can only dream of. It's not because female sports are not as exciting to watch. It's not because female athletes aren't good at what they do, or aren't good competitors. It's not even because people won't watch female sports.

Truth be told, we haven't even been exposed to female sports on nearly the same scale as we've been exposed to male sports. We also know that public policy changes behaviour; just look at what public policy has done to reduce smoking habits and impaired driving. The requirement for Canadian content in the media has helped Canadian artists flourish and compete with music coming from the U.S.A..

We hereby demand that the CRTC implement minimum air time for female sports. Sports radio, sports stations and news programming should be compelled to highlight female sports at a minimum ratio. Such programming must also not be aired in the middle of the night, but rather it ought to share a significant portion of primetime airspace. While the ratio might not be 50:50 immediately, this certainly should be a long-term goal. Waiting until there is a market for female sports entertainment will not achieve the goal of equality, because it would have happened already. There is simply no logical reason why male sports would more appealing to the market at large.  In fact, airing female sports may result in bringing more fans into the fold of sports entertainment.
