The food banks and shelters in our cities are constantly struggling for enough food for the marginalized of our communities. Yet the big box grocery stores throw out tons of yet edible food on a daily basis. I would like to see it made mandatory that this food is offered to the food banks and shelters before any is disposed of. Much of the food is in a damaged container but still edible. Meat thats been on the shelf for a couple days but still good. Tons of day old bread thats better than getting no bread at all. Much of this used to be removed from the bins after hours by the needy but stores have since switched to enclosed containers to prevent this. The stores simply want people to purchase these items and they willl then donate it for profit. These stores throw out enough edible food to fill the food banks of our country but instead its thrown away because they would rather throw it away than give it to those in need. We need legislation demanding this waste be stopped.
