RESUMPTION OF FUNDING TO UNRWA BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT

Dear Honourable Minister Bibeau,
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) was created in 1950 to carry out direct relief and works programmes for Palestine refugees, and is unique in terms of its long-standing commitment to this vulnerable group of refugees.
Canada has been a prominent supporter of UNRWA since its inception, but under the previous government, was the only donor to have ever withdrawn funding.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued the following priority in his mandate letter: “Reenergize Canadian diplomacy and leadership on key international issues and in multilateral institutions. This would include... to champion the values of … human rights including the rights of women and refugees.”
Given Canada’s proud re-emergence on the international stage in contributing assistance to humanitarian crises, including Canada’s interest in securing a seat at the United Nations Security Council, renewing funding to UNRWA would be an expression of Canada’s commitment to a key UN organization and would also be in keeping with Canadian values and Canada’s moral standing in the international community.
