URGENT ACTION ALERT: As early as Monday, Feb 27 two boats packed with sealers will descend upon Henry Island, a small privately-owned island off the coast of Port Hood in Cape Breton, NS. They will be going to Henry Island to kill every moulting pup they can find. DFO is claiming it is a "commercial hunt for personal use" which is BS - there is no such thing. It's either commercial or personal use. Can everyone please contact DFO and express their disgust that DFO is allowing sealers to kill seal pups, particularly on private property? DFO claims everything below the high water mark belongs to the Crown, and only what is above the high water mark belongs to the landowner. However, it is HIGHLY unlikely sealers will know/care about the distinction. If seals are above the high water mark, they will either be killed anyway, or harassed down to below the low water mark to kill them. Pups not yet ready to begin swimming will be forced into the water in an attempt to flee from the killing and will likely drown. Last year I saw frightened pups in the water trying desperately to swim in the rough waters and it was heartbreaking.
CONTACT INFO: If you wish to call the Gulf Region directly, please call 506-851-7747. The office is closed so you will reach voicemail, and please do leave a polite message. They will be open again on Monday at 8 am so be sure to call again to speak with someone directly.
Please also send an email to DFO Headquarters at firstname.lastname@example.org. You could also email email@example.com and he can forward your emails to the regional Gulf office, as he did with mine. Please do try to stay polite, though, otherwise they will just be binned. "
