Canada's Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander: Open Canada's "Refugee Status" to persons affected by changes in Russia.

This petition is to counter a "letter writing" campaign from Canada's far right wing groups directed at Right Honourable Chris Alexander and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, advising them to not explore the possibility of extending Canada's Refugee Policy to include crimes or threats against LGBT persons in Russia (and other places).

I feel it is important that our government will hear this other voice: the voice of compassion.

We have already started receiving refugees and applications.  As the days pass since Russia's landmark decision we have seen violence spike.  We have already seen a video of a 5-man mob's brutal beating of a transgender woman. This taped message was a call to others to do the same.

As a Canadian-born, LGBT identified woman, I KNOW that I am privileged, protected by our government and laws. I feel that our positions on Human Rights and Personal Protections - especially with this issue - is an important one for our country's international policy. We have already been one of the nations in the forefront of expressly including LGBT people under human rights protections and extending equal rights. I believe we as a nation are moving in the right direction and should do what we can to help others who are not only lacking those protections but blatantly are the target of outright hate crimes.

Our national philosophy of human dignity demands that we not stand by and ignore this.

I hope you will add your voice to mine.
