REQUEST ACTION TO ADDRESS SECOND-HAND SMOKE INFILTRATION
As residents of The Sommerset, 10186 and 10188 155 Street, Surrey, BC, we are concerned about the health impacts of our exposure to second-hand smoke migrating from neighbouring units into our homes.
There is no known safe level of exposure to this dangerous human carcinogen. Many of the undersigned continue to experience second-hand smoke infiltrating their homes on a frequent and on-going basis. Others are supportive of this petition because of the known health hazards of exposure to second-hand smoke. Our buildings house many children, who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of second-hand smoke. It is proven that second-hand smoke raises the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) in infants.
We are requesting that you adopt a no-smoking policy for the building that bans smoking in individual units, on balconies and patios and the entire residential property (or limits smoking to an outdoor designated smoking area, away from individual units and balconies, operable windows and air intakes).
We further request that until the building is 100% smoke-free, the Strata manager investigate and address all complaints of second-hand smoke infiltration. If management fails to take reasonable steps to address these complaints, we will apply via the appropriate avenues for an order requiring management to provide quiet enjoyment and/or compensate owners for their loss of quiet enjoyment.
Please let us know in writing how you plan to address this issue. We would appreciate a response for a resolution to this escalating problem within 10 working days.
