The Railway Reserve is a very special linear green space that flows through the vibrant and RICH community of Victory/Nelson South. It connects active transport commuters safely with the CBD & Richmond and allows native birds & insects to thrive within these communities.
It serves as a safe route for school children and families to walk to the preschool, kindergartens, primary school and intermediate in the vicinity.                                   It offers a peaceful environment for walkers, runners, cyclists, dog walkers, and children to explore and play within.

Sadly, due to the looming roading option (NZTA) hanging over this beautiful space for over a decade the Nelson City Council have rejected funding requests to beautify and enhance this natural space and neglected it’s maintenance allowing weeds/old mans beard/blackberry to choke the foliage. NZTA currently have a proposed highway directly through this piece of railway reserve out for consultation.

NCC have pushed back on public interest in lighting the reserve to make it a safer and more viable active transport route through the dark winter hours, halted initiatives of local schools to plant natives and add seating which would also further enhance the space. Public art/sculptures have been left damaged/vandalised unlike others around the city. 
It is time for NCC  & NZTA to STOP procrastinating and realise the vital importance and significance of such a green space within the city and STAND UP, Have a clear voice AGAINST ANY roading option through there and begin the Mahi to restore, enhance & preserve this space for ALL generations of Nelsonians to come.
