This year was my very first year at Camp Sumatanga. I have never seen a group of people so accepting and loving, no matter your name, where you’re from, your sexual orientation, or your past. It is a safe haven for many people, but that may be coming to an end.

This year, the camp leadership changed. Along with it, the new leader, Gene, wants to change our camp- taking away our spiritual and emotional connection with God and with the camp. He thinks that they can earn more money by making it an activity camp instead of a Christian camp.

Every year, my dad looked forward to going to camp. He always wanted me to come with him- up until this year. It was so stressful on the deans and staff who volunteered because of the impending changes that could be made on the camp. So, they went their own way and did camp as it should be done, with the same traditions as years before had done. It was even a battle for our freedom as campers. My dad has been coming to camp since he was in school, and always looks forward to a new year of camp. He knows every camper and cares for every one of them. These past years, he was one of the deans at camp, giving up his counselor position for the sake of Senior High camp.

If this camp does not get new leadership, I fear that it will ruin spiritual connections for many people and they will lose the place they knew that they could come back to and the place that would be a constant in their life.

I may not be a long-time camper, but I know that nobody will be coming back if there are no spiritual aspects. The counselors that came back every year to help out will be gone, and there will be no more Camp Sumatanga as we know it.
