Camden Council have signed an agreement with a telecoms provider to lease our residence’s roof at Bridge House Chalk Farm to erect a phone mast. Our primary concern is for the health of all that live in the building particularly children as well as for those in the vicinity including a nearby school. Children have brains that are more vulnerable to microwave radiation. There are many young children within our residence, several of whom are located on the top floor and will be sleeping directly underneath the site of the proposed phone mast. Electromagnetic radiation has been linked to many diseases including cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and is believed to interfere with the immune system. Many countries such as Australia, Sweden and parts of the United States have banned phone masts from being in or near schools.

In addition to the health concerns we feel the visual appearance of the mast challenge the concept and experience of residents' homes as a domestic place. Having to confront such a discordant incursion daily would detract from the quality of life and wellbeing residents rightly expect from coming home. Our block which is close to the Roundhouse and Chalk Farm station is already situated in a polluted area of the borough both in terms of air quality and noise from traffic and people out late. Am phone mast adds another level of electromagnetic pollution not to mention significant distress to those living underneath it.

Camden Council have ignored our clearly communicated concerns and failed to do a proper consultation. They have also ignored other concerns that have been mentioned including suspected bat habitats on the roof. They have not investigated our concern for what is a protected species with due diligence.

The roof at our residence has had historic and numerous issues with leaks. This has been a consistent fact of life for many residents despite repeated works and remediation that Camden Council has procured. Ahead of the phone mast installation we discovered that the borough have also sealed off fire exits to the roof for those living in the top floor flats. Access to the roof for top floor flats for emergencies has been a feature of the block since the residence existed. Fire exits were only discovered by chance to have been sealed down by one resident. The Council admitted failing to informed residents of this.
