As a Grandparent with five young grandchildren whose parents are educators, I am only too well aware of how vital it is that both children and parents receive the support that they need in the early years. It has been demonstrated over and over again that good quality pre-school and Early Years education provision is essential to give children, especially those most disadvantaged, a good start, levelling the educational and societal playing field later in life.
Cambridgeshire County Council are planning to reduce the number of Children's Centres in the county for which they provide essential financial support from forty to just ten centres. This is intended to save the Council £1,000,000 per year but at what cost to the individual children, their families and the community?
Whilst I am well aware that austerity measures have left councils cash-strapped and having to stretch to meet all of the demands upon them, jeopardising the futures of all our children, particularly those in vunerable situations, and making it even more difficult for "Just About Managing" families is short-sighted and unfair. I urge Cambridgeshire County Council to think again.
