In the approximately 70 years since the discovery of plastic, its use in our everyday lives has grown to a level that is threatening the ecosystems of the Earth and the beings that inhabit them, including humans.

In fact, every single piece of plastic every produced is still with us, gradually degrading over hundreds of years.  Plastic waste is accumulating in natural environments (i.e. 1 ton of plastic enters the oceans every 4 seconds), our food chains (i.e. microplastics found in the tissues of animals), harming living creatures, and poisoning our water supply.  Whether it's in the form of straws, packaging, plastic bags, takeout food containers, etc our addiction to and wasteful use of single-use plastic has become a genuine threat to the health of our planet and all that inhabit it.

Although it's not the sole source of the problem, plastic bags are one example of the single-use plastic problem:  on average used for 12 minutes before being thrown away to degrade over decades or centuries. Bottled water, unless it is actually necessary due to water SAFETY, is another example of a major single-use plastic waste problem: Canadians use 5.3 million water bottles per day, resulting in 2 billion single-use plastic water bottles a year. There should be no place for this kind of damaging waste in our one and only home. Although there are recycling programs in some jurisdictions for plastic bags and other single-use plastic, less than 10% of single-use plastic is actually recycled, and, furthermore, manufacturing these materials uses limited fossil fuels and contributes to the pollution of our environment in other ways.

Governments are moving too slowly to put an end to the wasteful and excessive use of single-use plastic that is accumulating in and poisoning our environment at an alarming and steadily increasing rate.  By signing this petition you will be supporting an important step toward the end of our harmful dependence on single-use plastic and the protection of our one and only home for generations to come.
