Hello, my name is Noor, I am a young Muslim girl and I need help.

Islam is the second largest religion in our student body yet Gwinnett county still does not recognize their annual holiday. We are allowed to have an excused absence yet we never even get to enjoy it because we are worried about assignments and tests that are simply not overlooked. The Jewish population, the third largest religion in our student body receives 4 days of Hanukkah off, Christians have Christmas off (often referred to as Christmas break), but Muslims, who aren't asking for 4 or 8 days, can't get one?

Every year on Eid Muslim students like myself have to miss school and worry about assignments and tests when we should be thinking about the end of Ramadan and celebrating one of the most important days of our year. Students in Gwinnett County receive Columbus Day and MLK Jr. Day so why not Eid?

On my favorite day of the year I don't want to have to wake up at 5 in the morning, ride the bus for 4 hours everyday to my high school, and come back to piles of homework to complete. This year on Tuesday, May 3, Eid will be coming up and that looks like a very real possibility. I don’t want worry to cloud my mind or my GPA to suffer. I want Eid off. It's not just about getting a normal Monday off for everyone, not even close. It's about giving the Muslim community of Gwinnett county our one precious day. Our one day where we get to smile, laugh, pray, eat, and celebrate the end of a beautiful month- Ramadan.

I’m only 14 years old and I know I don’t have NEARLY the power to do this by myself but I need to try. I owe it to my friends, my little cousins, my school, and the coming generation of Muslims all over the nation to at least TRY.

It is vital that this issue be brought to the attention of superintendent, Calvin Watts but it takes one step at a time. You can make a difference. You can help. You can make hundreds of Muslims enjoy a day so very close to their hearts with just the click of a button. So what will it be? Ignorance or freedom?

Update: Jazakallah and thank you for all of the support and donations however, donations simply go towards spreading more awareness through the website and are not required at all, so do not feel pressured to donate. A signature is more than enough!  ❤
