I came to Calvin because of its Japanese Language offering. My life was changed for the better by my experiences there and the language teachers are wonderful- but I would not have ever looked Calvin's way if they didn't offer Japanese. I'm so grateful they did.

Class of 2019, Linguistics/Spanish/French. My language studies at Calvin have led to my current work as a translator and English teacher in Spain and allowed me to meet new people and travel. And, more importantly, they have taught me to tolerate differences and uncomfortable situations, to be compassionate and help others, and to make mistakes and know how to ask for help.

I’m signing because the foreign language education I received at Calvin College has allowed me to have a bilingual and bicultural family. Before taking Calvin’s core language requirements, I had no idea that Spanish would become my major and later my Master’s degree. I fully support this petition!

2010 graduate in speech/language pathology and Spanish. I have used my Spanish language skills daily in my career at Grand Rapids Public Schools for the last 8+ years. We have hired several bilingual Calvin graduates since I began. This skill is highly valued in the field of speech pathology.

I participated in Calvin’s 2009 Spring Semester in Spain. I went on to get my degree in Spanish Education. I am forever grateful to my time at Calvin and the experiences and people I have been blessed with through my foreign language studies.

To drop your foreign language requirement will be a long term detriment to your overall core program. Please do not drop this requirement - it opens the door to exploring other cultures that is critical to understanding other parts of God’s glorious world.
