Why this petition matters

The murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor has sparked global unrest regarding racial justice and has elicited responses from many corporations about their views on the Black Lives Matter movement.
SUNY College at Old Westbury, which boasts being "the most diverse student body in SUNY and among the most diverse in America" has yet to make an official statement regarding Black Lives Matter despite a 27% African American student population. A university that claims to be the most diverse and having a sizeable African American student population should be front-and-center, standing for the rights of their students. Their failure to acknowledge this worldwide racial groundswell is abhorrent to the current student body and alumni. The current president of SUNY Old Westbury, Calvin Otis Butts III, who is an African American male and a Baptist preacher stated in a June 19 interview with ABC that "the church provided social cohesion" and the "major spokesperson was the preacher". It is apparent that those views do not translate to his role as the President of this university.
By signing this petition you are expressing your support for the current student body by forcing the administration to make a statement regarding Black Lives Matter. A failure by SUNY Old Westbury to make a statement should warrant serious consideration from current and prospective students, along with alumni, to reconsider their future support of the university.
