Problem
There are very limited options for inclusive education within Catholic school. Families with special needs children are often faced with heartbreaking decisions to leave Catholic education completely or to find different schools for their children to attend--sometimes even separating siblings. Church history is filled with mandates to educate all children, and Saint Paul VI sets forth in the 1965 Declaration on Christian Education, "Since all Christians have become by rebirth of water and the Holy Spirit a new creature so that they should be called and should be children of God, they have a right to a Christian education." The church recognizes that all baptized children of God have a right to a Catholic education.

Solution
With the support and force of four strong parishes, Pope Francis Global Academy ought to provide inclusive educational programming for families with special needs children. No other elementary Catholic school in our immediate vicinity offers such a program, and archdiocesan wide options are extremely limited as well. This will set our school apart from all others by attracting many more families eager for an opportunity of a Catholic education. Seeing our special needs children not as resource-drainers, but as sacred and holy gifts will truly make all of our students global citizens ready to spread Christ's word.

Personal story
We are Ryan and Darlene Duggan, and our youngest daughter Madeleine was adopted from China at age four. Because of her institutionalization, she has cognitive delays that became too great for Pope Francis Global Academy to accommodate. We transferred her to our local public school this year, and while she is flourishing there, we remain crestfallen that she cannot receive the same faith-filled education that her sisters do. We are asking our community to join us in supporting the establishment of an inclusive education program at Pope Francis Global Academy.
