"Undocumented" is a precise and cogent noun to describe such individuals. "Illegal" on the other hand implies criminality, which is not simply inaccurate, but hostile.

Language can humanize or dehumanize. I believe journalism should reinforce humanity. It should push us to see the stories and lives behind policy decisions. It should be on the side of life.
