Millions of people observed the law and science during the Covid-19 pandemic, isolating at home, keeping social distance at work or outdoors, cancelling weddings, funeral gatherings and even being prevented from spending precious final moments with sick or dying relatives, leaving the die alone, frightened and sad. 

Except there were some who didn’t think the rules didn’t apply to them. Offending members of the public were arrested, fined, imprisoned. Except in the case of our Political leadership - the very people who wrote the legislation and demanded we observe it - who  held repeated parties at the public’s expense, gathering in festive drunken groups right at the heart of our Government. Even the very day before our Queen was forced to mourn her life partner, isolated and seated alone as she said goodbye to the man she loved and who stood by her side for seven decades  

Now the Police have caught up with them. We now have a Prime minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer who have become the first such Ministers in history to have broken the law while in office. 

No apology is enough. We have the rule of law in this country for good reason. If you write the law, you are  expected to observe it lest our entire justice system break down. If you break the law, your right to set it must be forfeited.
