Higher Wage for K-12 Educators
Higher Wage for K-12 Educators
Hi! Everyone’s saying that teachers should get paid more after quarantine and I agree! I don’t know how to do that but I felt like a petition was a good first move into making ideas reality!
My mom has been a teacher for 12 years now. It absolutely hasn’t been a financially comfortable life, especially living in California where teachers don’t make enough to afford their own homes. My mother teaches special education. She has taught all grades from K-12. Right now she teaches 4th grade. Special education in elementary school is typically multi subject, so there is one teacher for Math, Science, Reading, etc.
Since quarantine has begun she has worked to understand and plan how to teach her students through Google Hangouts. If you are currently a university student taking classes through Zoom and you struggle with it, imagine being a 9 year old with non traditional learning abilities. A 9 year old SPED student who has to figure out how to use a chrome book, focus and do assignments and sometimes without your parent because they still have to work or they are non-English speakers.
If you are a professor or a school teacher imagine your side of that scenario.
The schools guidelines suggested 10min for teachers to conference with parents about the new system. She has spent hours with each parent explaining how to use the system and how to help their child learn at home.
We know that being a teacher isn’t an hourly job. They put as many hours as they want into it. They don’t get paid for hosting after school clubs or study sessions. They don’t even get compensated for SCHOOL SUPPLIES.
School is from 8am-2/3pm. But I’ve seen my mom leave school just to go put more work into her class, into her students. Not only has she bought her students binders, pencils, but in some cases soap and shampoo and taught them how to care for themselves because their situation at home wasn’t allowing them that learning experience. She can’t afford to get her car fixed, so she takes the bus to school and to her students houses to tutor them when they’re struggling. She brings snacks for them when she notices they don’t come to school with their own. Over the years she has learned another language to be able to better communicate with her students and their parents who’s first language isn’t English.
When one of her students parents died, she was at the funeral to support her student and the student was so happy to see her. I know there are teachers that I have been a student of, who would and who have, shown up for me in and outside of school. If I didn’t have these passionate people in my life, making sacrifices of their own for the sake my education and learning experience, there’s no way I’d be where I’m at now.
We all have teachers that we really loved or we really didn’t like, but regardless if every teacher is a super-teacher or not, they put in tremendous work-work that’s not being properly compensated. We’re calling for our government to initiate a 5.9% wage bonus for teachers working through quarantine and a 6%-11.2% wage increase for K-12 educators across the nation post-quarantine.
Teachers are special people on this earth and they need and deserve an exceptional wage for their work.
