We want to make a permanent pause to the use of harmful chemicals, like oxybenzone, in sunscreens. These sunscreens that contain these chemicals end up harming our coral reefs and ends up bleaching the coral. These chemicals leach off of the nutrients coral provide and this leads to the coral and algae that live on the coral to become stressed. When stressed the algae begins to leave the coral leaving it colorless and vulnerable. Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse biomes. With over thousands of species inhabiting them, they are neck and neck with tropical rainforests when it comes to biodiversity. We have lost 27% of our coral reefs so far and it is predicted that we will lose up to 60% in the next 30 years if we continue to live the way that we do. With a warning label on these sunscreen we believe it will compel consumers to avoid these brands. When consumers stop purchasing these items, profit will decrease for these companies, making them realize the damage they are creating.
