Students Against Gun Violence

Hello! We are eighth grade students at Park Day School in Oakland. We are doing a class project about the effect of gun violence in our community, through an organization called Generation Citizen. We recently had two student-led walkouts. One on March 14th for March For Our Lives protest in response to the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, and another for the Columbine High School shooting anniversary on April 20th, here we walked to City Hall with the intention of meeting with lawmakers. With this petition, we are raising support for California bills AB2888 and SB1100. AB2888  is a law allowing the court to make an ex parte gun violence restraining order against someone they think could harm themselves or someone else while owning or purchasing a gun, and SB1100, which would raise the minimum age of purchasing a gun to 21.

By signing this petition you are showing your support for students against gun violence in Oakland and the laws we have been advocating for. We also ask that you lobby your legislators to pass these laws. Some legislators you can contact from the California State Legislature and Oakland City Government are CA Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (assemblymember.thurmond@assembly.ca.gov), Mayor Libby Schaaf's office (officeofthemayor@oaklandnet.com), Oakland City Special Projects Coordinator, Sun-Kwong Sze (msze@oaklandnet.com), and District 1 Councilmember Dan Kalb (dkalb@oaklandnet.com).
