Victory! Governor Jerry Brown Signed SB 813, Abolishing Statute of Limitations on Rape Prosecution
Oct 12, 2016 — Hello Everyone,
Thank you all for your support. Your many thousands of signatures and comments made a difference! With your help, all of our campaigning, lobbying and testifying, we were successful in abolishing the statute of limitations on rape and sexual assault prosecution in our state of California.
The Justice For Victims Act SB 813 passed every single legislative hearing with unanimous votes across party lines. On Wednesday, September 28, 2016, Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill. The bill is not retroactive and will go into effect in January 2017. It eliminates the previous 10 year criminal statute of limitations on rape, sodomy, lewd or lascivious acts, continuous sexual abuse of a child, oral copulation, and sexual penetration. No longer will victims of rape and sexual assault be barred from seeking justice in California, because of an arbitrary time constraint -- provided that they have enough evidence to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that a crime occurred.
My End Rape SOL peers and I, which include Bill Cosby Survivors, are now setting forth to abolish the statutes of limitations on all forms of sexual violence in every state of our nation. Many of us, working on the cause, are rape survivors, as are many of you. We are all grateful for your help in transforming our collective trauma into triumph for future victims of rape and sexual assault.
Below is a followup interview I did on Fox News Good Day L.A., on September 30, 2016, two days following the Governor's signing of the bill.
Thank you all for helping to turn victimhood into victory for future survivors of sexual violence.
God bless you all.
