Recently the Internet has been A-Buzz with the decline of the northern hemispheres bee population, theories have ranged from cellphones, to parasites, to pesticides. Now studies undertaken in the Us and Europe have brought a number of culprits to light, the foremost dangerous being Neonicotinoid pesticides
Neonicotinoid pesiticides are a commonly used Neuro-active pesticide that was originally synthesides by the Bayer corporation and is used all over the world, especially in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Neonicotinoid pesticides are partially responsible for the decline of honey-bee populations in the USA and Europe. Studies by University of Maryland have confirmed this pesticide decreases bees immune system allowing infestation of colonies by Varroa destructor mites and Nosema ceranae parasites. This has lead to the record death of 1/3 of the bee population in the US.
At the continuing rate we will run out of Bees and thus lose our ability to grow fruits and vegetables in the United states of America.
This will lead to increased importation which will lead to an increased cost of food, and possibly National famine and rationing.
Fortunately the EU, due to overwhelming scientific evidence has recently voted to ban use of Neonicotinoid’s in its borders, which should help combat the decrease in their population.
Why has the U.S.A not done the same?
Bayer, the primary manufacturer of Neonicotinoid pesticides, has spent an estimated $1,973,000 on lobbying and over $18,000 of which is from their crop sciences division More info at (http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/clientsum.php?id=D000042363)
Help fight this grim future and urge the California state legislature to completely ban use Neonicotinoid pesticides in California. If we do nothing, and the bee population continues to decline America as you know it will irreparably decline and millions will starve.
If you want to further aid the Bee’s boycott Bayer products, a list of Bayer products can be found here
