Increase Safety Regulations on Small Farms in CA

Stop exempting small farms from OSHA safety inspections!
Did you know?
- Agriculture is the 6th most deadly industry in the United States.¹
- From 2003 to 2010, work related deaths of children under 16 in the agricultural industry totaled more than the deaths of workers under 16 in all other industries combined.²
However, it does not need to be this way.
The American Farm Bureau Federation lobbied Congress in 1998 to pass the Enforcement Exemptions and Limitations under the Appropriations Act, which exempts farms of ten or fewer workers from Occupational Health and Safety Administration’s (OSHA) safety inspections. This loophole exempts nearly 88% of American farms from inspection! ³
Because of this, most farms are allowed to use outdated and dangerous equipment, like tractors that do not have installed safety structures to prevent rollovers (ROPS, pictured above). 80% of all tractor deaths are caused by preventable rollovers, however, small farms are not legally required to purchase tractors with ROPS installed. ²
Likewise, children are allowed to operate tractors at any age due to insufficient regulation, and are at high risk of being killed in an accident. This is the cause of so many workplace deaths of children on American farms.
Sign this petition to urge Congress to close the loophole which allows small farms to avoid safety regulations! Save the lives of children across the country!
