Beatriz Aguilar started this petition to California

Hello,

My name is Beatriz Aguilar and I am a rising senior at the University of California, Davis. I took and have completed a Native American Studies course at the University of California, Davis with Professor Liza Grandia where we learned about Ethnohistory of Native Peoples of Mexico and Central America, 1491 to the present.

This petition is asking for the state of California to consider investing in medicinal herbs, and plant knowledge by including curandero/a's (healers), plant medicinal promoters, midwives, etc. in local clinics--especially those located in low-socioeconomic and disadvantaged communities.

From as early as the Zapotec people in the Central Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, there has been important plant knowledge and practices imposed in indigenous communities and more to cure illnesses, and other malfunctions in our bodies not widely recognized by doctors such as some that lie in the following 15 categories were used: (1) culture-bound syndromes; (2) digestive system; (3) respiratory system; (4) skin; (5) genitourinary system; (6) musculoskeletal system; (7) pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium; (8) nervous system and sense organs; (9) circulatory system; (10) infectious and parasitic diseases; (11) endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases; (12) injuries, poisoning, and other consequences of external causes; (13) bruises and sprains; (14) tumors; and (15) others.

According to research done for the scholarly journal: "Patterns of Knowledge and Use of Medicinal Plants in Santiago Camotlán, Oaxaca, Mexico" more youth are losing plant knowledge when it has been more proven than the traditional and modern form of westernized medicine prescriptions.

Help the State of California (California Health and Human Services Agency) recognize the absence and failure they are doing to low-income and economically disadvantaged communities by limiting ancient practices, knowledges and possibilities in the health care system.

A local Northern California non-profit organization such as Fathers and Families of San Joaguin location in Stockton, California are reclaiming power by taking ownership over our natural resources, health, and recreational spaces through preventative health, environmental justice workshops and through policy advocacy leadership to promote health justice and instill it in the lives of our youth. Lets get the attention of the state to consider healers and non-traditional "American" ways be incorporated and normalized in American health institutions.
