Jalen Moore started this petition to California Interscholastic Federation

The governing body of high school sports in California - the California Interscholastic Federation or CIF - has put into place guidelines that are severely punishing thousands of high school basketball players by severely limiting play. The CIF has declared that the high school basketball season cannot take place unless counties are in the yellow tier, meaning minimal Covid-19 transmission.

The CIF and school districts are making a huge mistake by not letting us play the sport we love. Recreational activities, like playing basketball, keeps many kids out of gangs, off the streets, and primarily focused on the sport they play. And because of grade requirements to participate in extracurricular activities, playing sports like basketball also keeps kids focused on their education.

I, as well as most other high school basketball players in the state, believe that Covid-19 is a serious health threat. But I also believe that we should allow the players to make their own decisions. Many high school seniors are still hoping for college scholarships and need access to recruiters. Other high school seniors may not get the luxury of playing basketball at the next level and this will be their last season.

I believe with proper preparation we can prevent cases from rising. We could play with minimal to no crowd attendance. We could play with masks. We can work within state health guidelines. What we need is a chance! A chance to showcase what we've dedicated a huge part of our lives to. This is a monumental decision that is being made. I am asking for a reconsideration.
