Make Sildenafil Available to Kids with Rare Diseases
This petition had 311 supporters
Sildenafil, otherwise known as Viagra, is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the country, taken by millions of Americans each year. Since the 1990s, insurance companies have been required to cover this prescription for adult men with erectile disfunction. However, new research has shown Sildenafil to be effective in treating several life-threatening conditions that affect children, such as Protein Losing Enteropathy, and Lymphatic Malformation, but most insurance plans are refusing to cover these prescriptions.
Children with rare diseases often require off-label use of medications as their only hope of improvement, but insurance companies routinely block their access to these potentially life-saving treatments, even while providing it for for non-life threatening conditions like erectile disfunction.
If a doctor deems a medication promising enough for a child to try, insurance should be made to cover it. Please join me in petitioning California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones to stand up for children's right to access potentially life-saving medication.
