As just revealed, the University Of California Public school system has just moved to a test blind admissions process. However, the schools should be test optional as it gives students who have worked hard for these tests an opportunity to showcase their abilities. The test optional way would help kids who have worked hard and it wouldn’t hurt kids who have succeeded in their extracurricular activities as they could showcase their abilities on that front. Test optional also allows for the schools to have a semi - objective way of comparing students across schools. And although the SAT / ACT exams have their issues, just because something is flawed does not mean we should completely discount it, as grades and essays are flawed as well. Test optional allows for colleges to have an extra datapoint in evaluating their students for potential college acceptance or denial. Some lawyers have stated that the exams add unnecessary pressure to students, but that’s actually not true. Students will just feel added pressure onto grades and their essays feeling an equal pressure for the process, just not the pressure on the exams. Personally, I’ve been working over about forty hours to prepare for this upcoming exam and discounting it would be a literal waste of my, and other students time. Test optional for the public California school system should be the policy going forward. Sign this if you are with me!
