Sue Delaney started this petition to California Governor Gavin Newsome

The Oakland Zoo has been shuttered since mid-March due to the Coronavirus outbreak.  It has been losing $2 million per month due to lack of visitors, and may be forced to shut down permanently.  Regional parks and botanical gardens in California have been classified as “outdoor museums”.  We are asking Gov. Newsome to classify the Oakland Zoo as an “outdoor museum” as well.  The Oakland Zoo will not survive without visitors, and we stand to lose a valuable source of conservation and habitat education, zoological science, and entertainment for generations to come.  There is no guarantee that the animals, many of which are on the endangered species list, would be able to successfully rehome at another appropriate facility.  Gov. Newsome must act now!  Please sign this petition to show your support for this Change.  We cannot afford sacrifice the lives of these precious species of animals.
