Freedom Fighters started this petition to California Governor and

Schapria Chapman was 26 years old when he made a decision that would change the rest of his life, he chose to LIVE.

Mr. Chapman grew up in New York and was new to the California area, by way of his parents who traveled to different states for military assignments. Being in a new place is always a challenge but he attempted to socialize and make friends. He met a woman and they hit it off as most young people do, they agreed to meet later to hang out. This young lady had a boyfriend and they were known for robbing individuals in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, Mr. Chapman did not know of the history.

The evening persisted, Mr. Chapman arrived at the young lady’s house and pulls his car into her driveway. Before Schapria could get out of his car a man pulls in behind him to block him in. The unknown man was the young lady’s boyfriend who proceeded to get out of his car and open fire on Mr. Chapman to rob and murder him. Mr. Chapman did the impossible, ran towards the shooter wrestled with him to get the gun and it went off killing the shooter.

California does not have self-defense laws and Mr. Chapman was sentenced to 50 years for trying to protect his life against a man intending to shoot and rob him. Schapria was a victim of a botched robbery and a murder suspect according to the state of California. However, California has changed their laws since and Mr. Chapman successfully had his charges reduced to manslaughter from murder 1 so he can be released on time served. His court date that would have sent him home was scheduled in March and then cancelled due to Covid-19. He is a free to go but still being held in prison because his court date to declare the basis of his release has continuously been cancelled and not considered an emergency that will qualify him for a virtual court hearing. Family and friends of Mr.Chapman are concerned that if he stays incarcerated he could contract Covid-19 and his delay in release could become a death sentence.

There are so many family's going through this same fear and worry for loved ones who's freedom has been used a bargaining chip for COVID-19. This pandemic is not an excuse to violate constitutional rights but a bigger reason to uphold them. Please support us in our fight for #Freedom.
