California DMV Denote Amateur Radio License Plates as Such

This is to request that the California DMV treat Amateur Radio Special Recognition license plates like other Special Recognition license plates by incorporating a background, symbol, graphic or specific border lettering to signify Amateur Radio. Although classed under the California DMV as “special recognition, there is no recognition, special or otherwise. Additionally, since amateur radio call sign license plates are often mistaken for ordinary personalized license plates there is extensive anecdotal evidence of law enforcement officers using their MDT to verify a plate and checking as a personalized plate rather than an “H” plate resulting in a “Not on file” response and a traffic stop. Virtually every other state has some form of special marking on amateur radio plates, and California should as well. California plates support seven characters, and no standard, regularly assigned callsign exceeds six characters it would be a very simple matter to add an appropriate symbol preceding the callsign, not unlike the Gold Star and Purple Heart plates, which incidentally also include a description at the bottom of the plate. Further, this request includes the request that existing amateur radio license plates be upgraded for a small, reasonable one-time fee in recognition of the correction to provide recognition of this Special Recognition plate.
