Help STOP the state-approved needle giveaway in Orange County!

Orange County is taking steps to clean up our streets and take back our neighborhoods. Earlier this year, the county removed 14,000 dirty needles from the Santa Ana Riverbed. But, our progress is now threatened by a dangerous needle giveaway.

Beginning Monday, August 6th, state officials have authorized a mobile needle giveaway to operate in Orange County. A single drug addict can receive as many as 200 needles through the needle giveaway program.  According to the program's statement to OC Weekly, for every dirty needle, a drug addict can receive the same number back PLUS an additional 20 needles.

Orange County Chairman Andrew Do is calling on the California Department of Public Health to immediately reverse its decision. He is also asking the County of Orange to approve a lawsuit to stop this dangerous program.

This Needle Giveaway puts our kids at risk.

This program is a proven failure.  Staff at Santa Ana libraries say that syringe littering has become a "huge" problem. "We found them on shelves, near planters, window sills, in books,” one staff member at the Santa Ana Public Library told the Daily Pilot. "A cleaning lady was pricked by one."

This Needle Giveaway is a public health risk, especially for workers.

Every year, more than 1.8 million needles are unaccounted for in San Francisco, which operates one of the largest needle giveaway programs in the state. Transit riders in the Bay Area say that BART has become littered with needles.  Earlier this year, a Caltrans employee was reportedly pricked with a hypodermic needle while cleaning up a homeless camp in San Diego. In March, a library employee in Seattle was “rushed to a hospital after being stuck with a needle.”

This Needle Giveaway is opposed by the County of Orange, law enforcement and OC cities.
