Why this petition matters

Started by Nathan Lilien

The sole intent of this petition is to give members of our community access to play recreational basketball freely and without restriction. This includes, but is not limited to: putting rims back onto courts, removing boards that block the rim, and any other action that would allow for everyone in the South Bay to have access to a basketball court near them.

Our world has changed so much due to the corona-virus. Daily life has been significantly altered, but many aspects have become normal again. The beaches are back open, and the strand is bustling with activity as it once used to. People are also enjoying what is still accessible in parks. Open fields are heavily used, as well as the remains of the basketball courts for roller hockey, paddle tennis, etc. People within the community are engaging in all sorts of full contact physical activities at parks, so why can't basketball be included with this? How is this so different than playing in an open field, or going to the beach or strand and being in close proximity with dozens of other people? Baseball and soccer practices are being performed officially with teams outdoors. Soccer is a contact sport, yet there are scarcely any available hoops to even play casually. Why is basketball prohibited if people are allowed to use the abandoned basketball courts for other sports, that have equal contact and exposure as basketball would? Everyone who goes out to the park or the beach or any other recreational area knows the potential risks, however they still choose to go. Why can't this same thought process be used when  playing basketball?

There is a whole community of athletes waiting to get back to the game they love. Let them.

Let us play!
