***UPDATE:  The judge ruled that the Department of Education is to temporarily reinstate certs until the next hearing on the 25th of January.  While this is a step in the right direction, it is more important than ever that we share this petition and get the word out.  You can also email the California Department of Education at

Guiding Hands is a one of a kind special needs school in Northern California that was abruptly shut down less than 2 months after the tragic death of a student while being restrained.  They have fully cooperated with investigators and the Department of Education.  They immediately changed protocol and sought outside education to better improve practices.  Wednesday they got word that Friday would be their last day.  2 days notice.

Today, in special needs schools and public schools across the state kids will be restrained. Closing Guiding Hands School did nothing but give us one less option and displace students. This was not and is not a Guiding Hands problem. This is a special education problem in our state. Guiding Hands is just the patsy so the Department of Education can ignore the bigger picture and people can get their pound of flesh.  The 100+ parents and caregivers who CHOSE to keep their children at the school deserve to have a voice.  We deserve to have the one place where our kids truly fit in and get the services they need, back.
