The Issue

Clara Adams earned her gold medal. She crossed the finish line first in the California state 400-meter final fair and square.

What happened next was a celebration, not a crime.

Clara, a 16-year-old sophomore and the underdog in the race, celebrated with a fire extinguisher—an homage to Olympic champion Maurice Greene, who once did the same.

She sprayed her spikes after the race, away from other athletes, and with joy in her heart. For that, officials disqualified her, stripped her of her title, and banned her from her next event.

This punishment was not only harsh, it was unjust.

Clara didn’t taunt anyone. She didn’t endanger anyone.

She honored the sport and brought excitement back to the track. CIF officials overreacted, even physically grabbing and yelling at her. No warning. No chance to explain. No fairness.

Now Clara is fighting for her title back, with the support of her community and legal counsel. The Monterey County Board of Supervisors agrees: it’s time to make this right.

We stand with Clara. She deserves to be celebrated, not punished. Her time and win should be officially reinstated. Her dreams, scholarships, and future should not be put at risk over a joyful, harmless moment.

Sign this petition to demand the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) restore Clara Adams’ rightful title.

Let her moment of victory be remembered for what it was: inspiring, bold, and earned.
