We, the LVJUSD Middle School students, are strongly against the addition of required instructional time on the weekday mornings. This decision was supported by and created based upon parents' response to the current distance learning schedule.  We are responsible teenagers, who should be able to voice our opinions on matters that directly affect us. We ask the school district to consider how this additional time will negatively impact our mental and physical health. In the new handbook, it was stated that "It is important to us that students do not become fatigued through the overuse of webinar-based instruction."

The school board, in making this decision, should take into consideration the following factors:

-Disrupting an already established routine

-Some students must provide childcare to younger family members

-The damage screen time causes to our eyes

-Assuming that students have the attention span to spend extra hours in front of a computer screen

-The negative impact on mental health, such as less time outdoors, additional workload, and fewer hours for self-care

-Previously, morning support hours have been used to complete homework, study for tests, get individual help from teachers, or as time away from a computer screen to relieve stress

-Many quieter students can use these support hours to ask questions without a large crowd listening

-Students would be required to attend online classes at the same time as many younger siblings, possibly causing internet lagging or crashing

-Lack of sleep students may experience if they must stay up late to complete homework, study, or do extracurricular activities, only to wake up early in the morning and try to pay attention to their classes

-The hours required by the state (as adopted by LVJUSD) are already being satisfied with the current schedule; therefore, adding additional mandatory morning class time is not a necessity

In conclusion, we hope that the school board will reconsider its decision to make morning support hours mandatory for the middle school level.  We are in favor of our current schedule and routine remaining the same.
