Sheila McFarland started this petition to Calgary Catholic School District

At St. Michael Elementary and Junior High School in Calgary, principal Lianne Anderson used [the N-Word] in reprimanding a group of Black students. As per the CBC news article https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-catholic-school-principal-recorded-racial-slur-students-1.5745427 Anderson asked the group "So how come it's OK for you to say [the N-word]?", in particular saying [the N-word] to them. The Calgary Catholic School District is defending Anderson's actions and said the principal chose to use the word "strictly for educational purposes."

The principal and the District are clearly tone deaf. In absolutely no situation is it appropriate for a non Black person to use [the N-word]. There are numerous ways the principal could have had a discussion with the students about the word without actually using it. The District needs to ensure that the principal receive additional training regarding anti-racism, and move forward with additional training for all their staff. Information regarding this new training should be make publicly available on their website for parents and guardians to peruse. Lastly we would like to see a news release confirming additional training for staff.
