Keep our historic artillery pieces where they are

The past few days has seen speculation on social media sites that the two artillery pieces on the Cairns Esplanade are in danger of removal. These cannon are currently placed opposite the Cairns RSL and are on either side of the Cenotaph. Their possible removal is part of a joint plan between the Cairns RSL and the Cairns Regional Council for the refurbishment of the Cenotaph ahead of the commerations planned for the centenary of the end of World War I.

We, the undersigned, want the two artillery pieces to remain in situ and to be a focus point, with the Cenotaph, of any, and all future refurbishments. They are a major part of the Esplanade's visual history and should remain. Alternately, if a decision is made to remove them, they should only be removed to another prominent site on the Esplanade.

Therefore we humbly request the Cairns RSL and the Cairns Regional Council reconsider any possible plans to remove the artillery elsewhere and keep them on the Esplanade.
