You are required by law to ensure your loved pets are registered and microchipped so they can be returned to you if lost. Unfortunately for the animal loving community of cairns following this law will not see you notified if your pet is killed. I was informed in writing by Cairns Regional Council that they do not carry a scanner with them upon collection of deceased animals. The animals are collected and taken to the dump.
The confirmation by council gives little hope to families who are still desperately searching for their loved animals, they may never get closure. However, if equipped with a scanner, camera and a phone, loving owners can be notified and collection can be made.
Contact has been made with various regional councils spanning from Cooktown to the Gold coast regarding their procedures and protocols on deceased pets. Majority are equipped with scanners and make every effort to make contact with owners.
It is concerning and disheartening to learn that paying registration and microchipping fees does not provide the community with peace of mind in the case of a missing pet. Cairns Pound is equipped with a scanner therefore, pets are regulary reunited with their owners. It is not unreasonable to see the deceased animal collection department equiped with a scanner also.
This petition has commenced in the hope Cairns Regional Council will make every attempt in taking further steps to improve the current procedures in place for deceased pet management.
In conclusion, it is important the animal loving community give Cairns Regional Council the appropriate time needed to improve current procedures and change the policy.
